Arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border fell by nearly 30 percent in June, marking the lowest level during President Biden’s administration, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). About 83,000 people were arrested in June, down from approximately 118,000 in May. This decrease follows the implementation of Biden’s new asylum restrictions.
Biden’s policy limits asylum processing to 2,500 people per day, effectively reducing border crossings. Acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller stated that recent security measures have significantly impacted unlawful crossings, with the seven-day average of encounters dropping over 50 percent since June 4.
The policy allows quick expulsion to Mexico, accelerated deportations, and criminal consequences for most migrants. Since the policy’s enactment, CBP has removed and returned more than 70,000 individuals to over 170 countries, the highest annual total since 2010.
The decline in crossings may benefit Biden politically, as immigration is a key issue in the 2024 presidential election. The White House criticized Republicans for not acknowledging the decrease and for blocking a bipartisan border security deal. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized Biden’s commitment to border security and urged Congressional Republicans to support the bipartisan bill.
