President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the U.S. military has carried out “decisive and powerful” strikes against Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen, vowing to continue “overwhelming lethal force” until attacks on commercial shipping stop.
The airstrikes targeted Houthi bases, leadership, and missile defense systems, aiming to restore freedom of navigation in key shipping lanes disrupted by the militant group. Fighter jets from the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, armed drones, and attack jets from regional bases conducted the strikes.
A senior official told The Hill that this operation “is not a one-day event” and could last “many days if not weeks.”
The Houthis, designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by Trump in January, have attacked commercial and naval vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since the Israel-Hamas war began. Trump warned Iran against supporting the Houthis, stating, “HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!”
