The Trump administration has approved its first U.S. weapons package for Ukraine under a new financial structure with NATO allies, according to Reuters. The deal uses the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism allowing weapons drawn from U.S. stockpiles to be paid for by NATO countries.

Two officials familiar with the approval said Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby signed off on up to two shipments valued at $500 million each. The aid is expected to include air defense systems to help Kyiv counter intensified Russian drone and missile strikes. The Pentagon has not commented publicly.

President Trump first announced the arrangement in July, explaining that NATO would reimburse the U.S. for weapons sent through the program. “The weapons that are going out are going to NATO, and then NATO is going to be giving those weapons [to Ukraine], and NATO is paying for those weapons,” he told NBC News.

The move comes after the Pentagon paused certain shipments earlier this year over concerns about U.S. stockpile levels. While Trump previously criticized supplying Ukraine, he has shifted toward supporting military aid as Russia resists ceasefire negotiations.
