U.S. intelligence warns that Russia may use its new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) in Ukraine soon, following its debut in a Nov. 21 attack on Dnipro. The missile, based on the RS-26 Rubezh ICBM, has a smaller warhead and is viewed as a tool for intimidation rather than a battlefield advantage, according to a U.S. official.
Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the missile after the strike, threatening its use against NATO nations aiding Ukraine. This came after revisions to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, lowering thresholds for nuclear responses to conventional attacks.
The Oreshnik’s use marks the first wartime deployment of an IRBM since a Soviet-era ban on such weapons ended in 2019. Meanwhile, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has urged an immediate ceasefire, asserting Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate.
