The White House has unveiled a new $300 million weapons package for Ukraine, utilizing presidential drawdown authority to allocate arms from U.S. reserves. This aid includes anti-aircraft missiles, artillery rounds, and anti-armor systems, addressing Ukraine’s critical weapons shortage in its conflict with Russia. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting Ukraine’s difficulty in responding to Russian advances due to a lack of ammunition.

Despite this support, a senior defense official acknowledged the U.S. has nearly depleted its funds for aiding Ukraine, with current efforts financed through savings from long-term defense contracts. This workaround comes as a direct response to Congress’s deadlock, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson’s reluctance to pass a $60 billion additional aid bill for Ukraine. The U.S. had previously managed a $200 million aid package in December 2022 from prior year’s funds, but the possibility of including long-range ballistic missiles in the latest package remains uncertain, given inventory limitations and the absence of new Congressional funding.
