The United States has been placed on CIVICUS’s global watchlist for human rights concerns, with the nonprofit citing President Donald Trump’s executive overreach, suppression of protests, and treatment of the media since returning to office in January.
CIVICUS, which monitors global civic freedoms, warned that mass firings of federal workers, dismantling of foreign aid programs, and crackdowns on pro-Palestinian protests are eroding democratic dissent in the U.S.
“The Trump administration seems hellbent on dismantling the system of checks and balances which are the pillars of a democratic society,” said Mandeep Tiwana, CIVICUS interim co-Secretary General.
The U.S. joins Congo, Italy, Pakistan, and Serbia on the 2025 watchlist for declining civic space. The country is now rated “narrowed”—CIVICUS’s second tier after “open”—indicating occasional violations of basic rights.
The group urged governments on the watchlist to end ongoing crackdowns and hold perpetrators accountable.
