Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is under Senate Intelligence Committee scrutiny for her past support of Edward Snowden as she seeks confirmation as Director of National Intelligence (DNI). In 2014, Gabbard introduced a resolution to drop charges against Snowden, later urging a pardon for him, citing limited whistleblower protections at the time.
Senators remain divided over her explanation, with Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) acknowledging her concerns about whistleblower protections but emphasizing Snowden’s actions endangered national security. Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) dismissed her reasoning, accusing her of shifting principles for political gain.
Gabbard has since expressed support for the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), calling it a “vital national security tool.” She also highlighted reforms improving whistleblower protections and safeguarding Fourth Amendment rights.
Her confirmation remains contentious, with senators raising concerns about her approach to classified information and controversial past positions, including her meeting with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
