Zohran Mamdani, who recently won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, received unexpected praise from conservative figures Tucker Carlson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Friday. Both applauded his debate performance, particularly his refusal to name a foreign country he’d like to visit, saying he’d stay in New York to serve his constituents.
“That guy was the only person to say he’d focus on New York,” Carlson said on The Tucker Carlson Show, highlighting Mamdani’s response as grounded in local responsibility.
Greene agreed, calling Mamdani’s response the “right answer” and used the moment to criticize Andrew Cuomo as a “dirty establishment Democrat” over unresolved misconduct allegations.
Despite the praise, both strongly opposed Mamdani’s progressive platform, including rent freezes, free childcare, and no-cost transit. “I totally oppose his program,” Carlson said, while noting Mamdani’s emphasis on domestic economics over foreign policy.
Mamdani welcomed the attention, including from President Trump, who recently labeled him a “100% Communist Lunatic,” urging critics to review his policies directly.
