Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for surgeon general, has called for a total ban on social media for young children and teenagers, citing its harmful effects on mental health and societal well-being. During a Fox News interview in July, Nesheiwat linked social media use among youth to feelings of hostility and loneliness.
“Social media has had a tremendous negative impact on all aspects of society, especially our younger generations,” Nesheiwat stated. She supported Florida’s law barring children under 13 from social media and has connected platforms like Instagram and TikTok to risks such as cyberbullying and exploitation.
This aligns with a growing global movement. Australia recently proposed legislation to restrict social media for users under 16, with platforms—not users—facing penalties for violations.
Current Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has also raised concerns about social media’s effects on adolescents but has not advocated for an outright ban. Instead, he has supported warnings and restrictions, calling age 13 “too early” for social media use.
