President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for his second term have raised alarm among those he views as adversaries. Trump has vowed to act against perceived enemies, a pattern from his first term that may now intensify. Critics fear a lack of checks on his power with changes in personnel and legal interpretations.

Trump’s appointments, including former Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general, and allies in Congress promise a more aggressive posture. Republican House members plan investigations into Trump’s critics. Attorney Michael Bromwich noted clients fear retaliatory IRS audits, congressional probes, or baseless DOJ investigations, adding, “They’re very scared, and I think for good reason.”

Trump has called for legal action against figures like Jack Smith and the Jan. 6 committee members. Some critics are preparing for potential impacts, with national security attorney Mark Zaid advising a few to consider leaving the country temporarily during the inauguration.

Observers recall Trump’s past attempts to prosecute adversaries, often stymied by institutional resistance, including a grand jury declining to indict ex-FBI official Andrew McCabe. However, concerns persist about the damaging effects of even meritless investigations.

“The absence of guardrails this time raises the specter of alarm,” a former GOP aide said, emphasizing the need to take Trump’s threats seriously and literally.
