President Donald Trump has nominated Daniel Rosen, a veteran civil litigator with no prosecutorial experience, to serve as Minnesota’s next U.S. Attorney. If confirmed, Rosen would become one of the few in the role without a criminal law background.
Rosen, 59, is best known for his work in eminent domain cases, including the landmark land deal that enabled Target Field’s development. Critics, however, note that he lacks experience in prosecuting federal crimes — the core function of the office. “It’s a very unusual pick,” said Hamline University professor David Schultz, who added the selection reflects political loyalty over qualifications.
Rosen was one of three finalists recommended by a panel led by retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Barry Anderson. Anderson defended the nomination, saying Rosen’s civil experience brings “a wide variety of experience.”
The pick comes amid broader controversy over Trump’s U.S. Attorney selections, including failed nominee Ed Martin and newly tapped Fox News host Jeanine Pirro.
Rosen, a longtime GOP donor and Navy veteran, has pledged to relocate from Florida back to Minnesota if confirmed.
