WASHINGTON, D.C. — Approval of President Donald Trump’s management of the federal government has fallen sharply, according to a new Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released this week. The survey, conducted among 1,143 U.S. adults, found that only 33% approve of Trump’s management — a 10-point decline since March. The drop follows Democrats’ off-year election gains and comes amid mass federal layoffs and agency cuts during the record-long government shutdown.
Among Republicans, approval of Trump’s management fell from 81% in March to 68%, while support among independents dropped from 38% to 25%. Despite the decline in management approval, Trump’s overall job approval remains relatively steady at 36%, the poll found.
The 54-day shutdown has strained public confidence, grounding flights, halting pay for hundreds of thousands of federal employees, and cutting off food assistance programs nationwide. Pollsters say Trump’s numbers could recover once the government reopens, though ongoing disputes over expiring health care tax credits and continued unease about the economy and immigration may keep approval low. The poll reflects growing frustration within Trump’s own base and among independents as the shutdown drags on.
