Dr. Robert Redfield, former CDC director under President Trump, dismissed COVID-19 conspiracy theories following Dr. Anthony Fauci’s contentious hearing before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The hearing saw intense scrutiny from Republicans, including Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, who criticized Fauci’s handling of the pandemic.
During an interview with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation, Redfield addressed the claims of conspiracy regarding the government’s response to COVID-19. When asked if he believed in any conspiracies aimed at damaging the economy or profiting from the vaccine, Redfield responded, “No. I don’t believe that.”
However, Redfield acknowledged that there were elements of government overreach during the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of explaining the benefits of vaccines rather than forcing them on people, saying, “I think it’s important for you to explain to people why you think the vaccine is in their interest and if they don’t agree then next time you see them, you try to make sure you can explain it again.”
Fauci also addressed conspiracy theories during his testimony, particularly the lab leak theory. He stated, “I don’t think the concept of there being a lab leak is inherently a conspiracy theory. What is conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject.”
Dr. Redfield, who led the CDC from 2018-2021, previously expressed his belief that the virus “escaped” from a lab in Wuhan, China.
