Senate Republicans are expressing concern over former President Trump’s appeal to GOP voters, particularly women, following an embarrassing week for Trump. This comes after Nikki Haley garnered significant votes in Indiana despite ending her campaign early.

The ongoing Manhattan hush money trial, featuring explicit testimony from porn actor Stormy Daniels about her alleged affair with Trump, has further spotlighted Trump’s challenges with women voters. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) emphasized the need for an engagement strategy, noting that a significant portion of the GOP base still harbors reservations about Trump.

Polls indicate a substantial percentage of Republican voters in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries would not vote for Trump in November. Trump’s biggest problems lie with college-educated and suburban women voters. A recent poll found that only 31% of registered women voters believe Trump respects women.

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) expressed dismay over the graphic details of Trump’s alleged affair with Daniels being back in the spotlight. He compared it to the sex scandal that engulfed then-President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

Despite these issues, a Republican senator predicts that the majority of evangelicals and conservative Catholics will still vote for Trump over Biden, viewing it as a binary choice. However, other Republicans acknowledge that Daniels’ testimony under oath has breathed new life into the story.
