President Trump said Monday he would have ordered flags lowered to half-staff after the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband this summer if Gov. Tim Walz (D) had asked. The remark came as Trump defended his decision to lower flags nationwide last week following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Trump told reporters during an Oval Office event that the idea “wouldn’t have occurred” to him at the time, but added, “Had the governor asked me to do that, I would have done that gladly.” Walz’s spokesperson responded that the governor “wishes that President Trump would be a President for all Americans.” Walz later posted a video calling for unity that referenced Hortman’s assassination and a recent mass shooting in Minneapolis.
Trump’s statement omitted comments he made in June, when he dismissed the idea of calling Walz after Hortman’s death, saying it would “waste time.” At the time, Trump also criticized Walz as “slick” and “a mess.”
On Monday, Trump also confirmed he plans to attend Kirk’s funeral in Arizona, saying he expects to deliver remarks.
