Donald Trump has withdrawn his nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, citing the need to preserve the GOP’s narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said, “With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat.” He added that Stefanik will remain in Congress, rejoin House leadership, and continue promoting “America First” policies.
House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed the decision, stating Stefanik’s continued role in Congress “will allow us to keep one of the toughest, most resolute members of our Conference” and thanked her for “sacrificing” the UN role.
Stefanik, first elected in 2014, rose quickly within GOP ranks. She became recruitment chair for the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2018 and later replaced Liz Cheney as GOP Conference Chair after Cheney’s impeachment vote against Trump.
Trump said others could fill the UN role, while Stefanik would remain vital on Capitol Hill.
