Donald Trump is signaling he may invoke the Insurrection Act as protests over immigration raids grow increasingly violent across California and beyond. Over 4,700 military personnel—including 700 Marines—are now deployed in Los Angeles, a response that Gavin Newsom has condemned as unconstitutional and authoritarian.
The Insurrection Act, last used without a governor’s consent in 1965, enables the president to deploy troops domestically. Trump has called protesters “insurrectionists,” and White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, “We’re not going to let this happen to our country.”
Newsom filed a federal lawsuit to block the deployment and accused Trump of manufacturing a crisis, claiming troops were sent without basic provisions. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon spokespersons countered, blaming Newsom’s “ideology” and vowing to restore order.
Protests have now spread nationwide, including in Texas and New Jersey. The NYPD arrested 24 demonstrators inside Trump Tower. Meanwhile, Newsom warned the order could give Trump unchecked power: “This is a manufactured crisis… an illegal order.”
