Donald Trump warned Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Saturday not to oppose his sweeping tax and spending bill, saying the “GREAT people of Kentucky will never forgive him.” The message, posted on Truth Social, framed Paul’s vote against the measure as siding with Democrats to trigger a “68% Tax Increase” and a possible U.S. debt default.

The bill, which narrowly passed the House, now heads to the Senate where Paul has emerged as a key critic. The Kentucky senator said the bill’s inclusion of a $5 trillion debt ceiling hike makes it a “nonstarter,” though he might support it if that provision is removed.

“I still would support the bill even with wimpy and anemic cuts if they weren’t going to explode the deficit,” Paul said last week. With Republicans holding a narrow Senate majority, losing more than three GOP votes could jeopardize the bill’s passage.

Trump said he’s open to “fairly significant” Senate revisions and wants the process to play out before final approval.
