President Donald Trump said Monday he will “lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots,” repeating false claims that the practice is rife with fraud.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the U.S. should switch to “sophisticated watermark paper” ballots, which he argued would be more accurate and faster to count than mail-in systems and electronic machines. He also falsely claimed the U.S. is “the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting,” despite multiple democracies, including Germany and Canada, using it without significant fraud.
Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin told him during their Friday summit that U.S. elections were “rigged” because of mail-in voting. “He said, you won that election by so much,” Trump told Fox News.
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order requiring proof of citizenship to vote and limiting mail-in ballots to those received by Election Day. Democratic attorneys general are challenging the order in court.
