At a South Carolina rally, Donald Trump pledged to eliminate federal funding for schools he accuses of pushing “transgender insanity” and vowed to keep men out of women’s sports. This promise was part of a broader critique of transgender people and gender identity issues, which has become a focal point for many in the GOP. Transgender rights, particularly the participation of transgender individuals in sports and access to gender-affirming care for minors, are increasingly central in conservative political discourse, surpassing even abortion and same-sex marriage in prominence among Christian conservatives.

Critics argue these attacks on transgender rights are harmful, noting the significant mental health challenges faced by transgender individuals forced to live as the sex assigned at birth. Meanwhile, GOP-controlled state legislatures have passed laws restricting transgender rights, with at least 22 states banning gender-affirming medical care for minors. Trump and Nikki Haley, another Republican contender, have both engaged in anti-transgender rhetoric, with proposals to restrict transgender participation in sports and access to gender-affirming care.

The issue has polarized voters, with many Republicans believing schools teach too much about gender identity. However, opposition exists, with some viewing these political maneuvers as unethical or irrelevant to pressing issues like the economy and national security.
