In a “Meet the Press” interview, President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to pardon individuals charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack on his first day in office, including those who pleaded guilty. “I’m going to be acting very quickly. First day,” Trump said.
Defending those convicted, including individuals who assaulted police officers, Trump alleged the justice system pressured defendants into guilty pleas. “They had no choice,” he said. “The system’s a very corrupt system.” Over 1,500 people were charged in the Jan. 6 riot, with more than 1,200 convicted or pleading guilty and over 200 still in custody.
Trump criticized the House committee that investigated the attack, saying its members “should go to jail.” However, he emphasized he would not directly order their prosecution, leaving such decisions to his attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi.
Regarding past investigations into his own actions, Trump stated he would not pursue retribution, instead focusing on making the country “successful.”
