President-elect Donald Trump called on Sunday for the next GOP Senate leader to support recess appointments, enabling him to bypass Senate approval to fill key positions. Recess appointments, usually reserved for urgent cases, would allow Trump’s nominees to serve for up to two years without Senate confirmation. He emphasized the need for swift appointments, stating, “We need positions filled IMMEDIATELY!”
Trump’s demand comes amid a leadership race to succeed outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The contenders include Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). Trump-backed candidate Scott quickly endorsed Trump’s approach, saying he would expedite nominations as needed. Thune and Cornyn also supported prompt confirmations but took a more cautious stance on recess appointments, stressing the importance of avoiding Democratic obstruction.
Additionally, Trump called on GOP senators to block judicial nominations until Republicans regain control, urging, “no Judges should be approved during this period.”
