Donald Trump is calling on NATO allies to halt purchases of Russian oil and unite behind a sanctions package targeting Moscow, while also urging sweeping tariffs on China as a strategy to end the war in Ukraine.
In a letter posted on Truth Social, Trump said he is “ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.” He warned that energy imports from Moscow “greatly weaken” allies’ negotiating power against President Vladimir Putin. Trump also proposed NATO impose “50% to 100% tariffs on China,” to be lifted once the conflict ends, arguing Beijing has a “strong grip” on Russia that economic pressure could break.
Speaking on Fox & Friends Friday, Trump said his “patience with Putin is running out fast.” He framed the conflict as “Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war,” claiming it would not have begun under his presidency. He alleged more than 7,000 deaths occurred last week, a figure not confirmed by independent sources.
The call was echoed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at a G7 meeting in Canada. They urged nations to cut off revenues “funding Putin’s war machine” and said the U.S. had already taken “dramatic action against the purchasers of Russian oil.” GOP senators, including Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), are also pressing Trump to allow a floor vote on a sanctions package after a recent Russian incursion into Polish airspace.
Russia has shown no sign of slowing its military campaign. The Kremlin said negotiations with Ukraine remain on “pause,” weeks after Trump met with Putin in Alaska.
