President Donald Trump ordered Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza on Friday after Hamas partially accepted his U.S.-brokered peace proposal aimed at ending the two-year war. Hamas agreed to release Israeli hostages in exchange for 1,700 Palestinian prisoners, though negotiations over key issues such as disarmament remain unresolved.

Trump said Hamas appeared “ready for a lasting PEACE,” calling on Israel to “immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel would cooperate with Trump’s plan while ensuring it aligns with Israel’s principles.

The agreement’s initial stage includes a ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, and the establishment of a transitional government led by an international body. Hamas also expressed willingness to hand Gaza’s administration to a Palestinian technocratic body supported by Arab and Islamic nations.

European leaders and the United Nations praised Hamas’s willingness to negotiate, with French President Emmanuel Macron urging immediate follow-up. However, Israeli strikes continued Friday in Gaza City and Khan Younis, underscoring the fragility of the ceasefire prospects.

Trump has framed his mediation as a path toward “long-sought peace in the Middle East,” though experts warn core disputes over Gaza’s governance and Hamas’s demilitarization remain major obstacles.
