President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Tuesday to withdraw the U.S. from the UN Human Rights Council and stop funding the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a White House official confirmed.
Trump previously made the same moves during his first term, which President Biden later reversed. However, Biden suspended U.S. funding to UNRWA last year after Israel accused agency staff of involvement in the October 7 attack. Congress also halted UNRWA funding until March 2025.
The decision coincides with Trump’s White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel recently banned contact with UNRWA and opposes the UN Human Rights Council, calling it biased.
Trump said Monday he had no assurances that the Gaza ceasefire would hold. “We are hopeful,” said Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, adding that efforts continue to secure hostage releases and a peaceful resolution.
