President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Friday to rebrand the Department of Defense as the “Department of War,” invoking the agency’s original name from America’s early history.
Trump previewed the move earlier this week, saying the term “Department of Defense” lacked the strength and clarity of the original title. “We had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War,” Trump said during a news conference. “It’s a little thing, but I think you’ll be hearing about it.”
While the department’s formal name can only be changed through an act of Congress, the executive order will authorize the Pentagon to begin using “Department of War” as a secondary title across communications and signage.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a longtime Trump ally, reposted a Fox News announcement with the all-caps caption: “DEPARTMENT OF WAR.”
The Department of War was originally established in 1789 and retained that name until it was renamed in 1947 following World War II.
A White House fact sheet confirmed the plan, which will now be sent to Congress for formal legislative consideration.
