President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States, according to multiple White House sources. The U.S. has never had an official language at the federal level, though English is the most widely spoken language.
The move follows Republican-led efforts in Congress to pass similar legislation, which have previously failed. Many states have already designated English as their official language.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump criticized the use of foreign languages, stating at CPAC, “We have languages coming into our country… that nobody has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing.”
Critics argue that the order could impact multilingual government services, including voting materials, social services, and emergency response efforts. Supporters say it reinforces national identity and streamlines government operations.
The White House has not yet provided details on how the order would be implemented or whether it would affect existing language access policies.
