President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Monday directing Washington, D.C., to eliminate its cashless bail policy, Axios reports. The move is the latest escalation in the federal government’s control over the capital’s law enforcement, which already includes thousands of federal agents and National Guard troops deployed to the city.

The order is expected to pressure D.C. by threatening to withhold federal funding or block project approvals if the city refuses to change its system. It also directs law enforcement to seek federal custody for arrestees whenever possible, with officials arguing that federal judges are more likely to detain suspects pretrial than local judges.

D.C. abolished cash bail in the 1990s, making release decisions based on flight and safety risk. Advocates argue the system is fairer for low-income defendants and is not linked to crime increases. Critics, including Trump, claim cashless bail endangers communities by allowing violent offenders to walk free.

Trump has vowed to push Congress for a nationwide ban, though critics say such a mandate would exceed federal authority.
