President Trump is preparing to unveil a sweeping fiscal 2026 budget blueprint that proposes cutting over $160 billion from non-defense discretionary spending, The Wall Street Journal reports. The proposal outlines deep reductions to federal environmental programs, renewable energy initiatives, foreign aid, and education spending.

The White House is expected to release the proposal Friday. While largely symbolic, presidential budgets often signal political and policy priorities. Congressional Republicans, who hold slim majorities in both chambers, will ultimately shape what parts of the plan become law.

The administration’s proposal reflects Trump’s long-standing emphasis on shrinking government outside of defense, while continuing his administration’s pattern of sidelining climate-focused and international spending in favor of domestic security and economic nationalism.

The proposed budget is expected to reignite partisan clashes over spending priorities and comes as fiscal conservatives push to rein in deficits amid rising national debt.
