President Donald Trump announced Friday that conservative activist Charlie Kirk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously on Tuesday, which would have marked his 32nd birthday. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated last month while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Trump said the East Room ceremony at the White House will include Kirk’s widow, Erika. “Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions,” Trump said, calling the medal the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The president first pledged to honor Kirk shortly after his death on September 10. Utah prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder and plan to seek the death penalty.

Trump noted the ceremony will occur before his planned trip to the Middle East to attend discussions on a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. “It’s a quick trip, but I’ll be back in time for Charlie,” Trump said.
