President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, according to CNN. Noem, the first female governor of South Dakota, was previously considered as Trump’s potential running mate.
Noem’s background includes serving in South Dakota’s U.S. House seat from 2010 to 2019 and in the state’s House of Representatives before that. As DHS Secretary, she will oversee a team of 260,000 employees responsible for national security, spanning border control, aviation safety, and cybersecurity.
Border security is expected to be a major focus, especially with rising migration challenges that have tested current DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Noem will work closely with Tom Homan, recently appointed as Trump’s “border czar,” to address these issues.
