Washington, DC — President Donald Trump will meet Friday afternoon with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani for the first time, bringing two sharply opposed political figures face-to-face in the Oval Office. The meeting comes after months of public clashes in which Trump repeatedly labeled Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist, as a “communist,” a characterization Mamdani strongly rejects.

Mamdani said his team requested the meeting, emphasizing that he intends to work with any administration to improve affordability for New York’s 8.5 million residents. He said disagreements with Trump will not prevent him from pursuing policies to lower costs, including rent-freeze proposals, free city buses, and city-run grocery stores.

Trump has been a vocal critic since Mamdani’s surprise primary victory in June, at one point saying he would arrest the mayor-elect if he interfered with ICE operations and threatening to pull New York’s federal funding. Mamdani publicly responded on election night, telling Trump, “Turn the volume up… to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

The mayor-elect’s rise from long-shot contender to nationally watched figure has sparked debate over his progressive agenda and questions about how the city will pay for his proposals. Despite ideological distance, Mamdani argues that engagement with the White House is essential as he prepares to take office.
