President Trump is expected to make an announcement Tuesday afternoon regarding the Department of Defense, amid speculation he may propose renaming it the Department of War. The announcement, scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Oval Office, will be his first on-camera remarks in a week.

Trump has recently suggested that the department’s original name—used during U.S. victories in World War I and II—better reflects its mission. “Defense is a part of that,” he said. “We had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War.”

The Department of War was established in 1789 and renamed the Department of Defense in 1949 under President Truman.

In parallel, Trump has raised the possibility of deploying National Guard troops to Chicago, citing recent violence. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and city officials have opposed the idea. Trump posted Tuesday that Chicago is “the worst and most dangerous city in the World,” and pledged to “solve the crime problem fast.”

Last month, the White House deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., some of whom were armed or assigned to cleanup duties.
