President Trump announced plans to fire Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer following a disappointing July jobs report and sharp downward revisions for May and June. Without evidence, Trump accused McEntarfer, a Biden-era appointee, of manipulating data for political reasons.
“This Biden Political Appointee will be fired IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, claiming the economy is “BOOMING under ‘TRUMP’” and blaming both BLS and the Federal Reserve for alleged distortions.
The BLS reported only 73,000 new jobs in July, revising May and June’s combined figures downward by 258,000. Trump also criticized past revisions, including 2024’s election-year adjustments, calling them “records” for error.
Economists and analysts pushed back, noting that BLS is widely respected for its transparent methodology. The monthly survey draws from 121,000 employers and is benchmarked annually to unemployment insurance filings. Experts defend these revisions as standard statistical practice in refining preliminary estimates.
Trump’s unprecedented move threatens the political independence of federal statistical agencies, which are structured to remain apolitical in measuring the nation’s $30 trillion economy.
