Former President Donald Trump has agreed to be interviewed by the FBI as part of the investigation into the attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month. The FBI disclosed that the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had researched mass attacks and explosive devices prior to the shooting.

FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek stated that Trump’s interview is standard protocol for victims in criminal investigations. Trump was struck by a bullet or fragment during the July 13 incident.

The FBI has conducted roughly 450 interviews to understand Crooks, described as a “highly intelligent” but reclusive 20-year-old with a limited social circle. Investigators have not determined a motive but believe the attack involved extensive planning, including purchasing chemical precursors for explosives and using a drone near the rally site.

Crooks researched various topics online, including mass shootings and the assassination attempt on Slovakia’s Prime Minister. On July 6, he googled: “How far away was Oswald from Kennedy?” referencing Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated President Kennedy.

Crooks’ parents have cooperated fully with investigators, who believe they were unaware of their son’s plans.
