President Donald Trump said Monday that Rudy Giuliani will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM,” Trump posted on social media.

The announcement comes just days after Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized in New Hampshire following a high-speed car crash that left him with multiple fractures and other injuries.

Giuliani rose to prominence as New York City’s mayor, earning the moniker “America’s mayor” for his leadership after the September 11 attacks. In later years, he became a close Trump adviser and played a central role in spreading false claims about the 2020 election. He has since been disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., and declared bankruptcy after being found liable for defamation against two Georgia election workers.

The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make “exemplary contributions” to U.S. values, security, world peace, or other significant causes.
