President Donald Trump is expected to attend the opening of the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility in the Florida Everglades this Tuesday, alongside Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, NewsNation reported.
The remote site, backed by both federal officials and Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, is designed to detain undocumented migrants awaiting deportation. It will initially operate with soft-sided holding units and expand through July. The $450 million annual cost will be funded through FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program, which was also used during the Biden administration.
Under DHS-approved plans, the facility will house individuals apprehended in Florida and transfers from ICE custody nationwide.
Critics have dubbed the site “Alligator Alcatraz” due to its isolated location and the surrounding swamplands, which officials argue provide natural barriers to escape. The move comes amid intensifying immigration enforcement and legal battles over detention conditions.
