Donald Trump threatened on Saturday to revoke comedian Rosie O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship, escalating his rhetoric against critics in a Truth Social post. “She is a Threat to Humanity,” he wrote, suggesting she should stay in Ireland, where she had recently posted a video blaming Trump’s policies for deadly flooding in Texas.

However, constitutional experts and legal precedent are clear: a president cannot unilaterally strip an American of their citizenship. The 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship for anyone born or naturalized in the U.S. and prohibits revocation without due process.

“There is no constitutional basis for the president to revoke citizenship simply because someone is critical of him,” said one legal analyst in response to the post.

O’Donnell, a longtime Trump critic, had posted from Dublin, accusing Trump of undermining federal weather systems — comments that came after Trump-appointed officials acknowledged weaknesses in forecasting linked to recent flood fatalities.

Experts cite multiple failings in Texas’s early-warning systems, although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is pursuing upgrades. Trump has not provided any legal justification for the citizenship threat, and the White House has not responded to requests for comment.
