Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump is threatening to back primary challengers against Republican lawmakers who joined Democrats in voting to repeal his Canada tariffs, escalating tensions within the GOP over trade policy.
Six House Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Don Bacon (R-Neb.), and Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) voted Wednesday to terminate the national emergency declaration that allowed Trump to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. The resolution now faces potential action in the Senate, though Trump has signaled he would veto it if it reaches his desk.
“TARIFFS have given us Great National Security,” Trump wrote, arguing that the policy strengthens both economic and security interests. He warned that Republicans who oppose tariffs “will seriously suffer the consequences” in future primaries.
Democrats have indicated they may force additional votes on tariff-related measures in the coming weeks. Data cited in the report show the effective tariff rate on Canadian goods rose from 0.1% before Trump’s administration to 3.9% currently, while trade volumes between the two countries have declined.
The dispute underscores ongoing divisions within the Republican Party over executive authority and trade strategy heading into the midterm cycle.
