(Orlando, Florida) President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to dock pay for air traffic controllers who missed work during the ongoing government shutdown, even as thousands of flights faced delays across the country. On Truth Social, Trump wrote that he was “NOT HAPPY” with controllers who took time off and said he would recommend $10,000 bonuses for those who worked continuously.
The Federal Aviation Administration is planning flight reductions of up to 10% at 40 major airports by Friday if the shutdown persists. Air traffic controllers have been working without pay, and retirements have surged from about four to as many as 20 per day, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on CNN.
Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, pushed back on Trump’s remarks, saying absences are not coordinated. “This is not politics. This is the erosion of the safety margin the flying public never sees,” Daniels said, citing fatigue and stress among workers.
As the shutdown enters record territory, nearly 1,700 flights were canceled and thousands more delayed Monday, according to FlightAware.
