President Donald Trump threatened to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status on Monday, accusing the institution of promoting “political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting” behavior. “Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The warning follows the administration’s move to freeze $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in federal contracts after Harvard refused to comply with government demands concerning protest activity and campus policies.

Harvard, which holds a $50.7 billion endowment and is classified as a nonprofit, could face financial challenges if its tax-exempt status were revoked—though legal experts note it’s unclear whether Trump can act unilaterally.

The administration previously demanded changes to Harvard’s admissions policies, which the university rejected. President Alan Garber said no government should dictate what universities “can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”

Faculty groups have sued the Trump administration, seeking to block the funding cuts.
