WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has ordered the Department of Defense to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria following reports of mass killings of Christians in the country. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said there is a “possibility” of U.S. airstrikes or deploying troops on the ground.
“They’re killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria,” Trump said. “We’re not going to allow that to happen.”
In a Truth Social post Saturday, the president warned that if Nigeria “continues to allow the killing of Christians,” the U.S. will “immediately stop all aid and assistance” and could go in “guns-a-blazing” to “wipe out the Islamic terrorists.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded on X, writing, “Yes sir,” and confirming that the Department of War is “preparing for action.”
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu rejected Trump’s characterization, writing on X that “religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity.” Tinubu said Nigeria remains committed to protecting all citizens and working with the United States.
The administration has not announced a timeline or confirmed whether military options are imminent.
