President Donald Trump issued a warning early Thursday threatening “far larger” tariffs on the European Union and Canada if they coordinate economic retaliation against his trade policies.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had!”
While Trump has hinted at targeting the EU and Canada in his upcoming “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariff rollout, no specific measures have yet been imposed directly on them. On Wednesday, he announced a 25% tariff on all autos and parts not made in the U.S., which could impact both European and Canadian manufacturers.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called Trump’s move “a direct attack” and vowed to defend Canadian industries. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signaled willingness to negotiate but emphasized protecting European economic interests.
