The Senate departed for its August recess Saturday without confirming dozens of President Donald Trump’s nominees, following stalled negotiations and a heated Truth Social post in which Trump told Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to “GO TO HELL!”
The breakdown came after Democrats refused to expedite confirmations and Trump pressured Senate Republicans to cancel recess. Majority Leader John Thune warned Republicans may push to change Senate rules in September to streamline the process.
“This process… is broken,” Thune said, citing obstruction and delays. Schumer pushed back, calling a rules change a “huge mistake.”
The Senate held a rare Saturday session, but talks over a deal—reportedly tied to reversing Trump’s foreign aid cuts—collapsed after Trump’s online attack.
“Tell Schumer… to GO TO HELL,” Trump posted. “Go home and explain… what bad people the Democrats are.”
The impasse marks a new escalation in partisan gridlock, with neither side yielding. Democrats demanded spending concessions, while Republicans aimed to push through nominees before recess.
