President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has directed his attorneys to investigate the Smithsonian Institution, extending his administration’s scrutiny of universities to national museums.
“I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He claimed: “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”
The move follows Trump’s March executive order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which called for reshaping exhibits as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.
In response, the Smithsonian said it would cooperate with the White House. “The Smithsonian’s work is grounded in a deep commitment to scholarly excellence, rigorous research, and the accurate, factual presentation of history,” the institution said in a statement.
Earlier this month, the Smithsonian restored details on Trump’s impeachment to an exhibit after criticism from Democrats. The president’s action is the latest in a broader campaign to reshape cultural institutions, which has also included the Kennedy Center and higher education oversight.
