Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday evening suspending the entry of international students planning to attend Harvard University. The move escalates ongoing legal and political battles between the administration and the Ivy League school.
The order affects only Harvard, not other institutions, and directs cabinet officials to consider revoking current student visas for international enrollees already in the U.S.. The suspension will last at least 90 days, with possible renewal.
Trump accused Harvard of obstructing Homeland Security investigations into “illegal activity” and claimed the university had failed to maintain a secure environment. Kristi Noem, DHS Secretary, previously attempted to decertify Harvard’s exchange visitor program, though courts blocked the effort.
Harvard officials condemned the action, calling it a retaliatory violation of First Amendment rights. The order comes amid backlash from students, including Jewish critics who say the administration is misusing antisemitism concerns for political purposes. Trump’s order did not mention antisemitism but referenced Harvard’s use of affirmative action and ties to China and other governments.
