President-elect Donald Trump announced that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), a nod to both government reform and the popular “Doge” meme. Trump described DOGE as the “Manhattan Project of our time,” aimed at dismantling bureaucracy, cutting regulations, reducing wasteful spending, and restructuring federal agencies.
Musk and Ramaswamy have previously advocated for federal downsizing, with Ramaswamy proposing a 75% cut to the federal workforce. Trump has emphasized eliminating the “Deep State” by reducing executive branch power over government agencies. DOGE, set to conclude its work by July 4, 2026, would deliver a “smaller government with more efficiency” as a symbolic gift for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
While Trump envisions DOGE working with the White House and Office of Management & Budget, it is unclear if the department will be an official government agency, which would require Congressional approval.
