Donald Trump said Friday he would accept a “TINY” tax increase on wealthy Americans to aid lower- and middle-income workers, but warned Republicans against enacting it. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referenced George H.W. Bush’s failed “no new taxes” pledge, noting Democrats could weaponize any hike politically.
“The Radical Left Democrat Lunatics would go around screaming, ‘Read my lips,’” Trump wrote. “In any event, Republicans should probably not do it, but I’m OK if they do!!!”
Despite this, Trump reiterated plans to sign the “biggest tax cuts” in U.S. history soon. At an April rally, he said the cuts would be part of “one big, beautiful bill” that also slashes over $1 trillion in spending and boosts defense.
Democrats condemned the proposal. Chuck Schumer warned the GOP can’t cut taxes for the wealthy without hurting millions, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries called the House plan a “contract against America” that would end Medicaid and harm working families.
