President Donald Trump on Friday suggested the government may issue rebate checks to Americans using revenue collected from tariffs this year.
“We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “A little rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice,” he added, without providing specifics about eligibility or timing. A video of Trump’s remarks was posted on X.
The federal government collected over $100 billion in tariff revenue during the first half of 2025 and is on pace to collect more than $27 billion this month, according to Axios. While much of that revenue has yet to be felt directly by consumers, prices are starting to rise in heavily tariffed sectors.
Trump did not elaborate on the size of any potential rebate checks or how they would be distributed. Earlier this year, the administration floated the idea of a DOGE-linked savings stimulus, which ultimately did not advance.
Though Trump has downplayed concerns about inflation, a Federal Reserve study previously found that stimulus payments can contribute to inflationary spikes.
