Former President Donald Trump suggested “cleaning out” Gaza as a solution to its ongoing crisis, calling the region a “real mess” during remarks aboard Air Force One. Following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, Trump proposed that neighboring countries Jordan and Egypt house displaced Gazans.
“You’re talking about a million and a half people, we just clean out the whole thing,” he said, describing Gaza as “literally a demolition site.” Trump added he would discuss the idea with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, envisioning temporary or permanent housing for Gazans elsewhere.
Trump’s comments diverge from longstanding U.S. policy, which supports a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. They follow a ceasefire negotiated by President Biden that ended months of fighting in Gaza, leaving significant destruction and famine. The ceasefire includes a recovery plan for the territory.
